Heightened interest in nuclear energy among Member States of the IAEA has prompted hopes of a “nuclear renaissance”. The management of spent fuel from nuclear power reactors is an important concern relating to the use of nuclear energy.
With no geological repositories in operation and many repository projects delayed, there is increased interest in closing the fuel cycle and recycling of spent nuclear fuel. So, while a majority of countries have yet to decide on the final destination of spent fuel, long term storage is becoming a reality.
